How to Survive a Kitchen Remodel (and Still Manage to Eat Well)

The Reality of a Kitchen Remodel

You’re getting a new kitchen — finally! The vision is clear: new cabinets, countertops, and a space that actually makes cooking fun again. But before you can enjoy it, there’s one slightly inconvenient truth…

You’re about to be exiled from your kitchen for 4–8 weeks.

No sink. No stove. No dishwasher.

So what do you do — eat out every night? That’s expensive, exhausting, and honestly not sustainable.

The good news? With a little planning, you can make those few weeks a lot easier.

Here’s how to survive your kitchen remodel.

1. Set Up a Temporary Kitchen

Step one: reclaim some sense of normal. You don’t need your full kitchen to keep everyone fed — you just need a small, functional setup.

We’ve seen homeowners get creative with this: basements, laundry rooms, garages — anywhere with a water hookup or outlet can work.

If you’re remodeling with HOMEfix, we’ll even help you set it up. We can relocate your refrigerator to a nearby outlet, repurpose a few of your old cabinets for food storage, and use a plywood countertop to give you a stable surface for prepping food or setting small appliances.

You’ll be amazed how far a few basics can go.

Here’s your temporary kitchen survival kit:

  • Microwave
  • Slow cooker
  • Pressure cooker or Instant Pot
  • Grill (indoor or outdoor)
  • Electric skillet
  • Toaster oven
  • Hot plate
  • George Foreman grill (yes, literally)

If you don’t have one of these, don’t run to the store just yet — ask friends, family, or your neighborhood Facebook group. Someone almost always has a spare appliance they’ll gladly lend.

2. Cook (and Freeze) Before Demo Day

Before demo day hits, spend a weekend cooking.

Make large, hearty meals that freeze and reheat well — casseroles, soups, chili, pasta dishes, breakfast burritos, shredded meats for tacos. Portion them out into meal-sized containers and stack them in your freezer.

Then when your stove is gone and your countertops are covered in sawdust, all you have to do is microwave and enjoy.

Pro tip: Label everything clearly with what it is and the date. Future you will be grateful.

3. Cook for (and with) Your Neighbors

Colorado Springs has some of the friendliest neighborhoods around — so why not use that to your advantage?

Offer to cook a meal at a friend or neighbor’s house in exchange for borrowing their kitchen. You bring the ingredients, they bring the oven, and everyone wins.

When your remodel is done, invite them back to break in the new kitchen together. It’s a fun way to stay connected while your home’s under construction — and you might even make some lifelong friends in the process.

4. Know Where Kids Eat Free

If you’ve got little ones (or grandkids), dining out occasionally will keep you sane — but you don’t have to break the bank.

Whether it’s Chick-fil-A on Tuesday or Texas Roadhouse on Monday, a few free kids’ meals here and there make the remodel weeks a lot easier to swallow.

5. Remember Why You’re Doing This

It’s easy to get tired of washing dishes in the bathroom sink or making one too many microwave meals. But remember — this temporary inconvenience is leading to something amazing.

That first morning when sunlight hits your new countertops just right… when the cabinet doors close softly instead of slamming… when you finally have room to prep dinner without bumping elbows…

It’s all worth it.

You’re not just remodeling a kitchen — you’re building a better everyday life.

How HOMEfix Makes the Process Easier

Remodeling always comes with a little chaos — but our job is to make it as painless as possible.

Here’s how we help homeowners through the process:

We Plan Ahead

Our designers and project managers walk through every detail with you before demo day, so you know what’s coming, when, and how to prepare.

We Move Fast

Because we handle everything in-house — plumbing, electrical, cabinetry, painting, and finishing — there’s no waiting on scattered subcontractors. We stay on schedule and keep communication open.

We Keep It Clean

Every day, our team cleans up before leaving. Dust, debris, and tools stay organized so you can still live comfortably in the rest of your home.

We Stay in Touch

You’ll always know what’s happening next. Griff’s team is known for being responsive — we return calls, answer questions, and make sure you feel confident through every stage of the remodel.

Tips from the HOMEfix Crew

After years of remodeling kitchens across Colorado Springs, here’s our best advice straight from the crew:

  • Label your boxes. Store kitchen essentials separately so you can find what you need mid-remodel.
  • Plan for a “no-construction” zone. It’s your sanity space — somewhere to relax without drywall in sight.
